Plenty of classic board games have been updated over the years to varying degrees of success. An electronic talking component will be added or a litany of sound effects will be introduced to make game play more dramatic. And while some updates succeed in making the game more fun or at least more appealing to today's tech-savvy kids, many others overcomplicate things and actually reduce the fun factor. Mystery Date, aside from a bit of updated photography is still pretty much the same game it's always been as players move their pieces around a simple game board and then open a door to see which boy they'll imaginarily go on a date with: the popular snowboarder, the suave fellow in a tux, or the nerd carrying a load of books. It's a bit disappointing that the academic kid must be seen as the loser in this game but at least the game's makers have kept tradition alive. --Charlie WilliamsPrice:
Transplanted from England to the not-so-mean streets of Chicago, the screen adaptation of Nick Hornby's cult-classic novel High Fidelity emerges unscathed from its Americanization, idiosyncrasies intact, thanks to John Cusack's inimitable charm and a nimble, nifty screenplay (cowritten by Cusack). Early-thirtysomething Rob Gordon (Cusack) is a slacker who owns a vintage record shop, a massive collection of LPs, and innumerable top-five lists in his head. At the opening of the film, Rob recounts directly to the audience his all-time top-five breakups--which doesn't include his recent falling out with his girlfriend Laura (Iben Hjejle), who has just moved out of their apartment. Thunderstruck and obsessed with Laura's desertion (but loath to admit it), Rob begins a quest to confront the women who instigated the aforementioned top-five breakups to find out just what he did wrong. Low on plot and high on self-discovery, High Fidelity takes a good 30 minutes or so to find its groove (not unlike Cusack's Grosse Pointe Blank), but once it does, it settles into it comfortably and builds a surprisingly touching momentum. Rob is basically a grown-up version of Cusack's character in Say Anything (who was told "Don't be a guy--be a man!"), and if you like Cusack's brand of smart-alecky romanticism, you'll automatically be won over (if you can handle Cusack's almost-nonstop talking to the camera). Still, it's hard not to be moved by Rob's plight. At the beginning of the film he and his coworkers at the record store (played hilariously by Jack Black and Todd Louiso) seem like overgrown boys in their secret clubhouse; by the end, they've grown up considerably, with a clear-eyed view of life. Ably directed by Stephen Frears (Dangerous Liaisons), High Fidelity features a notable supporting cast of the women in Rob's life, including the striking, Danish-born Hjejle, Lisa Bonet as a sultry singer-songwriter, and the triumphant triumvirate of Lili Taylor, Joelle Carter, and Catherine Zeta-Jones as Rob's ex-girlfriends. With brief cameos by Tim Robbins as Laura's new, New Age boyfriend and Bruce Springsteen as himself. --Mark Englehart

The director and stars of 1998's You've Got Mail scoreda breakthrough hit with this hugely popular romantic comedy from 1993, about a recently engaged woman (Meg Ryan) who hears the sad story of a grieving widower (Tom Hanks) on the radio and believes that they're destined to be together. She's single in New York, he lives in Seattle with a young son, but the cross-country attraction proves irresistible, and pretty soon Meg's on a westbound flight. What happens from there is ... well, you must have been living in a cave to have let this sweet-hearted comedy slip below your pop-cultural radar. There's little complexity or depth to writer-director Nora Ephron's cheesy tale of a romantic fait accompli, and more than a little contrivance to the subplots that threaten to keep Hanks and Ryan from actually meeting. But the purity of star chemistry here is hard to deny, and this may be the first film to indicate the more serious and sympathetic side of Hanks that is revealed in later roles. With its clever jokes about "chick movies" and repeated homage to the classic weeper An Affair to Remember, this may not be everybody's brand of amorous entertainment, but it's got an old-Hollywood charm that appeals to many a movie fan. --Jeff ShannonPrice: $14.94

Zach Galligan, the star of the first Gremlins, is back, along with Phoebe Cates, his girlfriend from the first film. They're both working in an ultramodern skyscraper owned by a Donald Trump clone (a hilarious John Glover). Galligan's furry little buddy is captured by a mad scientist, who not only helps it multiply, but invests the nasty, scaly offspring with intelligence and the ability to talk. (Watch for the one that has Tony Randall's voice.) What follows is imaginative mayhem that spoofs old movies, modern television, and the conveniences of postmodern technology. In some ways, the sequel is even more inventive and laughter-inducing than the original. --Marshall FinePrice: $14.97
(OnDating) Dating can be expensive especially with the average number of dates singles go on being on the rise (courtesy of online dating). With that in mind it’s always a good idea to have some fun and effective budget dates in mind.
In this episode of OnDating, Andrea Syrtash explores several different budget dates that can keep you dating without breaking the bank.
This episode is titled “Best Dates on a Budget”…
(OnDating) Some online daters prefer to have a casual meeting before determining if they want to go out on a more elaborate date. This is known as the “pre-date”.
A pre-date is your opportunity to meet someone quickly that you’ve been communicating with online then determine if you want to go on an actual date with that person.
OnDating host Andrea Syrtash shares some of her ideas in this episode of OnDating called, “The Pre-Date”
(OnDating) In this episode of OnDating, Andrea Syrtash answers several dating questions providing dating advice to the average dater. Here are the questions that she answers in this episode:
“How can I get more dates?”
“Is it OK to kiss on the first date?”
“How do you legalize polygamy?”
Below the video, I provide the answers I would have given to those questions.
How Can I Get More Dates?
Research shows that the emergence of online dating has resulted in singles dating more than ever. Online dating and social networking are great ways to meet new people. If you are more of the “in-person” type, you should look to volunteeering to meet new people. You also get the additional benefit of helping out an organization or people in need.
Is it OK to Kiss on the First Date?
Kissing on the first date is a hot topic because a lot of people have internal debates as to whether or not it is appropriate. In reality it comes down to how comfortable you are with someone and how well you know them. For example, some people communicate for weeks online and on the phone before meeting for the first time. By the time a first date arrives they feel they already know each other. What’s amazing is the varying degree of opinions on the subject of kissing on the first date. I’d love to hear what you think -- please use the Comments section below to tell us why you think it is right or wrong to kiss on the first date.
How Do You Legalize Polygamy?
There’s no way I’m answering this one because, unlike Andrea, I didn’t think the guy was being serious when he asked that question. For information on polygamy, including practices worldwide, definitions, etc., visit Wikipedia. ![]()
(OnDating) When it comes to success in dating, many people aren’t sure where to start. In this episode of OnDating, Andrea Syrtash discusses five tips for success in the dating world. Here are the tips, followed by the video.
1) Sign up for three months of Online Dating.
2) Write out your “must have” and “can’t stand” list.
3) Pick up singles for friendship.
4) Network to create your own possibilities.
5) Be too busy to notice you’re single.
(Online Dating News Blog) eHarmony is starting a new eHarmony Free Communication Weekend event, this one taking place for five days. Starting on Thursday, February 11 those signing up for eHarmony will be allowed to communicate with matches for free for five days. The free communication event ends on Tuesday, February 16.
During the eHarmony Free Communication event, those signing up will not be required to provide a credit card number. They will be able to use most features regular members do, but not all. Features disabled during the free communication event include the ability to see photos and the ability to skip the matching process to go directly to email communication. That feature is enabled once you and your match have completed the initial communication process.
In January 2010, Online Dating Magazine readers named eHarmony the best online dating service. eHarmony received 43% of votes from online daters, followed by Match.com at 34%.
If you do decide to sign up for an eHarmony paid membership, be sure to see Online Dating Magazine’s eHarmony Promotion Codes. ![]()

(OnDating) This episode of OnDating talks about breaking up and includes an interview with Kristina de la Cal, author of the book Breaking Up Without Breaking Down. As with all the OnDating videos, it starts with a question on the street that people answer. In this episode, the question is, “Do you think most breakups are a blessing in disguise.” We got a laugh from the first girl to answer who said she doesn’t like breakups which is why she doesn’t date people.
